How things behave if memory pools is turned off is very dependent on the
malloc implementation provided by your OS.

By keeping memory pools enabled (the default) a lot of the load is taken
off from the OS provided malloc implementation, making it behave much
better.

No.

The defaults is probably pretty good for most setups.
