I have not been following this thread closely so if this is wrong please 
ignore.

We saw an issue whereby with using NTLM auth Windows Media Player would not 
talk NTLM and fell back to basic.

The issue is caused by a MS bug (found on an MS forum) the fix is that you 
must use a NETBIOS name for the proxy server in the media player options 
setting. i.e. do not fully qualify the proxy name.

strange but it worked for us with approx 1k+ hosts.
