Squid Version 2.5.STABLE3
OS: Fedora Core release 1 Kernel 2.4.22-1.2199.nptl

Is there malfunctioning in that squid version ?!

2.5.STABLE3 or 2.6.STABLE3? Which operating system?

Try upgrading to 2.6.STABLE18. It should reduce your CPU usage quite dramatically.
