No, not yet. On the fly content-encoding is inherently tricky to get
right as HTTP is not designed for this (in fact, most get it wrong to
various degrees, some major ones worse than others).

Yes, it will work quite fine provided the origin server follows the HTTP
specifications wrt Vary and ETag, and that it also supports responding
with gzip:ed pages to HTTP/1.0 clients.
