Ok, now for why the first attempt failed, could be this:

fwdNegotiateSSL: Error negotiating SSL connection on FD 129:
error:00000000:lib(0):func(0):reason(0) (5/0/0)
TCP connection to server1_ip/443 failed

I'm getting these to a couple of servers quite a lot, both in STABLE6
and STABLE7. Seems it's the bug #1814.
