I'd suggest checking for broken PMTU (eg, ICMP filtering somewhere, or an ADSL link with a smaller-than-1500 MTU, or transparent interception on a Cisco via route-maps rather than WCCPv2, etc.) You can try dropping the mtu on your outgoing request ethernet interface from 1500 to, say, 1450 (ifconfig ethX mtu 1450) and see if that fixes the problem.
