It is a minus.

It is a tilde. It is not part of the host name. The tilde is used on the deviantART web pages as a device to indicate that the following string is a link to a web site. It may, also, be used to hinder "bots" from trolling the site.

If it was a tilde the error would be different, Squid complaining about invalid host name (unless you disable these checks at configure time, in which case the URL would have worked via Squid if the DNS server accepts the ~. Mine does.)
