Does it matter? It only runs once per day (at midnight).

Personally at this point, I would just run Squid under strace or some other debugging interface and see if that gives any indication of what is happening.

While I certainly agree that the regularity of the crashes points to an outside influence, it doesn't preclude something internal (such as cache digest creation)...  *shrug*
