Thanks, found it. Problem is, I get a miss, no matter what.

For instance:

"Zaphod:/var/cache/squid # client -m PURGE http://www.squid-cache.org/
HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Server: Squid/2.4.STABLE7
Mime-Version: 1.0
Date: Wed, 21 Sep 2005 16:33:51 GMT
Content-Length: 0
X-Cache: MISS from Zaphod.no.domain.com
Proxy-Connection: close"

Or, more verbose-ly:

"Zaphod:/var/cache/squid # client -mv PURGE http://www.squid-cache.org/
HTTP/1.0 400 Bad Request
Server: Squid/2.4.STABLE7
Mime-Version: 1.0
Date: Wed, 21 Sep 2005 16:59:07 GMT
Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 886
Expires: Wed, 21 Sep 2005 16:59:07 GMT
X-Squid-Error: ERR_INVALID_REQ 0
X-Cache: MISS from Zaphod.no.domain.com
Proxy-Connection: close
