Are you sure this isn't the browser?  AFAIK if you tell the browser to 
remember your credentials it wont even display the auth dialogue box and 
simply re-auth in the background. At least that's what Konqueror does and I'm 
pretty sure Firefox/IE/Opera/Netscape do it the same way.
