Does this really make any difference for the problem with chopped Squid
error pages on failed https:// requests?

I thought it only made a difference in actually showing the errors at all,
not substituting them with the MSIE built-in generic error boilerplate
hiding all details about the actual error..

Answer:

No, unchecking the "friendly http error messages" does not make any
difference: As before, Squid error pages on denied http:// requests are
displayed completely, wehreas error pages on denied https:// requests are
not.

Also, there is no substitution of the Squid error page by Internet Explorer
in our case.
