So using the same router/FW for the squid system's default route is ok then,
correct?  I was thinking that I would have to dual home the system but that
defeats the purpose of FW'ing.

No. It is sufficient with an acl in the router indicating that traffic 
from the cache server should not be intercepted.

Many routers do this automatically for discovered WCCP cache servers.
