Re: [squid-users] Web page not returned from IP Address

Hi Frank

The problem is with a host that is accessed by an IP address that

can not be resolved by DNS (This is beyond my control and not

easily changed). From the server upon which Squid is running I am

able to view the page as expected using the IP address. Trying to

access the IP address from any of the host serviced by this proxy

results in the attempt timing out (clients are windows boxes).

We have had a couple of similar issues; one or two of them were down to our DNS setup - we had some firewall translation rules that provided a local address for a couple of external web servers that clients could access them directly.

Since we've migrated our DNS servers to Win 2003 any other connections to the internet domain failed because our DNS server was claiming SOA for the domain but only knew about the specific local entries we had created.

We do have two sites that our external ISP's DNS servers don't return for some reason. Using an online DNS lookup tool got me the IP address so we put it in the hosts file on the squid servers and the sites now work, resolving the address locally.
