FAQ only explains -how- to increase the limit, not what the impact is. Or perhaps I've missed a section....
The impacts:
*) Having to few will deny clients from using the proxy when under load
*) Having way too many will waste CPU time, possibly making the proxy not perform as good as it can.
The need is dependant on how heavily your proxy will be used. I'd go for an initial filedesc limit of 4096, monitor the usage, and increase if you get 'out of descriptors' errors.
Sounds like a good plan. If you monitor the filedescriptor usage using cachemgr you should get a pretty good picture of how many filedescriptors is needed in your network before it runs out of them.
