Sorry, still not clear.
It seems to me you are asking for a full rewrite but you are not explaining how.
The compatibility layer is to reduce the changes, if I remove the changes will
be bigger but you want them smaller.
I suppose squashing lot of patches to reduce the number of patches is not
a solution either.
