It is if for example, glib would decide to use also a constructor to initialize the library. I don't think that will ever happen.

True, we switched to constructor in spice-common some time ago. Not sure it's the best thing we could do..

Probably marginal, yet the current code is fine, so let's keep this condition?

all right, everybody likes shorter code, but not to the detriment of correctness or portability :)
