I think the condition only triggers if the list is empty? In which case
I'd just test for rcc->priv->pipe == NULL here, and move the
assignment out of the condition.

This makes this call much more expensive than before (though does not
really matter if we don't have many items in the pipe at any given
time). In particular, the use from drawable_remove_from_pipes() could
probably be improved, or dropped.
