It's not so obvious how to deal with pre-releases. For testing, you should be able to take git at any point, and I think it's a better way to check before releases, as you can conveniently look at history, bisect, patch etc. To me, it is not so great, it's still easy to miss important fixes during pre-release period. And it delays other work. I would rather maintain upstream stable branches (for example, the branches in Fedora or RHEL).
