That is exactly the procedure I would follow when implementing draw features in the spice-html5 client. There isn't really good documentation for the nitty gritty details of the spice protocol. Thus, I found myself having to dive in to the gtk code and instrument it so I could see the data being passed, and examine it to understand what the flags do. The gtk client code isn't too bad after you get used to it. (Notice I don't mention the server code. That stuff is terrifying <grin>).
