Sox: Soft and Hard Limiter using Compand

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hello Sox Users Mailing List,

Finding the documentation for the „compand“ effect as very difficult and hard to interpret I decided to post here the settings I used.

Soft Limiter: @-12db

compand 0.01,0.1 6:-12,-12,0,-10,0,0 0 -90 0.01

Hard Limiter: @-4db

compand 0,0 -4,-4,0,-4,0,0 0 -90 0

Regain:

gain -n -0.1

It is suitable to use these three effects in a chain.

I have left the last transfer point (0,0) that is usually omitted for clarity. It may be removed without charge to the function.

The Soft Limiter has three points:
(-12,-12): It will not touch any value lower than -12db.
(0,-10): Any value between 0db and -12db will be compressed to -10db, with a soft knee of 6db: this means that at -6db the compressor turned on 100%. (-12db + 6db).
(0,0): default value, no change if omitted.

The fast attack time of 0.01 is set the same as the delay. Release is longer 0.1.

The Hard Limiter also has three points:
(-4,-4): Any value less than -4db is not touched.
(-0,-4): Any value between 0db and -4db is limited completely to -4db.
(0,0): Default value, no change if omitted.

The attack and release, and delay time is 0, meaning the limiter acts instantly.

I hope that this helps some people.
If I have any mistakes in my interpretation, please say so.

Cameron.
