This is a regression between v2 and v3 I think.
Maybe we should remove DESTDIR from all variables and only use it in the
install target.

e.g.
SHLIBDIR ?= /lib
...
install:
	install -m 755 $(LIBSO) $(DESTDIR)$(SHLIBDIR)
