I tried 172.16.0.0/16 and I was able to ping and rlogin to the local machines on the same subnet. This address does not appear to be routable which is good. Unfortunately, Linux will still accept packets to itself with the 172.16.0.x as destination if the packet came from a different interface than what was configured.
