The reported number is as close to accurate as you're going to get.

What you're asking is basically how many people have the flu right now?
Well, I can accurately give you the number of people in the hospitals for
it, but ifyou want meto estimat the number of people who have it and just go
on through life with the flu and not tell anyone, well, thats a hairy
mosnter nobody can touch.

Scientifically, if you use any number other than the reported number, you're
even more inaccurate than you were before.
