Re: [Redhat-s390-list] OSA-Express not recognized with Beta kernel ofOct 4,2001 and IBM OCO modules

Al, thanks for raising the volume on this.

I've been trying to get my OSA-E Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) to work ever since the initial RedHat beta.

The very first beta that was put out worked fine with my OSA card. Every beta since then has not been able to initialize it.

Michael Lambert has been the most recent to complain about this problem. His post on 9/19 that spoke to this read:

Here is some email that IBM sent to me which (ostensibly) explains some of
the trouble I and others have been encountering:

"The problem is that Redhat seems to have a patch
(linux-2.4.8-tasklets.patch) applied
to their Kernel which changes the function tasklet_hi_schedule to __
tasklet_hi_schedule.
Our Kernel modules are built against a vanilla 2.4.7 which uses
tasklet_hi_schedule
and therefore cannot be used with your Redhat Kernel. I have contacted
Redhat and told them the problem."

In Mark's last post to me, he said that he found no problems with the
latest kernel image, so perhaps they have already resolved this problem. Of
course, I might just wait for the next version of the release to be out, as
it should be soon.

I have heard elsewhere (and folks that went to the IBM conference in Tampa last week brought back news) that IBM is working with RedHat to get this ironed out.

I don't mind RedHat not including lcs.o as long as they give us instructions on how to include it - which they have. What is very exasperating is that I have struggled with this for over 6 months with no success, while SuSE and Marist just work out of the box. I expect that Turbo does too, but I have not tried it.

Oh well, I'm just letting off a little steam. Hopefully a mostly civil rant.

When someone discovers the silver bullet for this monster of a problem, puleeeeeeze post it here!

We're trying to install the S/390 Linux beta iso images dated Oct 4 from
Red Hat's ftp site in an LPAR on a 9672-R35.  We're able to IPL the first
CD from the hardware management console and go through the dialog just
fine.  We're specifying the LCS driver so we can access our OSA-Express
interface (emulated ethernet) using its device number and the appropriate
IP address, netmask, broadcast, network, and gateway values.

We then get errors stating the device is not found:

SIOCSIFADDR: No Such Device
eth0: unknown interface: No Such Device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No Such Device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No Such Device
eth0: unknown interface: No Such Device
SIOCADDRT: No Such Device
SIOCADDRT: No Such Device

We're sure our values are correct since they work just fine when going
through the SuSE install using the same values.

We included the latest IBM OCO modules for LCS and QDIO/QETH into the
initrd and tapeinrd images per the docs and in fact can see them just fine
when we finally get to the "#" prompt.  We've also tried manually loading
the modules with insmod.  Either way an ifconfig only shows the lo device.
Eth0 doesn't exist.  Same symptoms if we try the QDIO/QETH modules with our
gigabit interface (which also works with our SuSE installation).

I guess my question is whether anyone has used an OSA-Express card (or
gigabit for that matter) successfully with the beta images.  Any
suggestions/comments/hurled stones are welcome.

Al Delaney
