strange rpm query behavior

I'm seeing odd rpm query behavior on a 64-bit system, and maybe someone
can explain the reasoning behind this to me.

Specifically, I'm seeing this on FC5-64bit. If I do an "rpm -q
libcap.i386" on a system where no libcap version is present, I get a
message "package libcap.i386 is not installed" and a return code of 1.
However, if I execute this query on a system where libcap.x86_64 is
present, but libcap.i386 is absent, I get no output from RPM, and a
return code of 0.

Why would this be happening?
