--macros in rpm 4.2?

Does the option --macros work at all in rpm 4.2? It seems to have no 
effect for me, or at least, macro files that I did not mention will also 
be read (the doc says "read files *instead of*..."), and I believe 
someone else also mentioned problems with it a while back...
