yes, I understand that it is not an error to not have a sig, but how can
--checksig report that the sha1 and md5 signatures are OK?
but that said, how can I tell if a rpm has been signed or not?

why is -K saying the signature is OK, when it is not signed.
[root@testserver rpms.pdinc.us]# rpm -K
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/mod_dav_svn-1.1.1-2.1.i386.rpm
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/mod_dav_svn-1.1.1-2.1.i386.rpm: sha1 md5 OK
Excitingly, missing signatures aren't errors.
