yeah, tough place to be in. Some thoughts, though others might have better ideas. You can force the removal, I believe, and you may be able to upgrade from 3.x to 4. I think MySQL.com has an RPM, but can't remember. Being half asleep I also wonder if you can look at the files section of the Red Hat rpm and see where it expects those files to be. libodbc.so.1 links to libodbc.so.1.0.0 on my RHEL 3.x WS and rpm -q --whatprovides libodbc.so.1 is unixODBC-2.2.8-2.3.0.2.
