Hm. This new behaviour means you will always have to install the rpmdb into the --root before you can do a --root --aid install. If the installing and installed to system are not the same version you could just as well install the other rpmdb into the installing system and (temporarily) point %_solve_dbpath to that rpmdb. Note that %_solve_pkgsdir is also interpreted relative to the installing system. Also, if the versions differ too much there might be problems with rpm not writing the correct rpmdb format, causing rpm in the installed system to be unusable. So in general people will be mostly doing same version installations using --root and --aid anyway.
