rpm -e stats all of /usr/share/doc?

I have some kernel-sources installed I want to get rid of with rpm -e
(4.2 on RH9). After a couple of ages I straced the process and found
it doing stat64 on /usr/share/doc/*. Is that normal behaviour? How can
I turn it off?

I already tried:

o Rebuilding the database just in case
o --nodeps
o --nodigest
o --nosignature
o --justdb
o all of the above

The database itself is quite fat, containing about 2000 entries and
having a size of 104MB.

Enjoy the Xmas break.
