Sound on Dell 4600c under RH9

I have a Dell 4600c on which I have installed RH9. This machine
has and Intel 82801 EB AC'97 Audio system. The RH9 system does
not successfully probe this card. I have tried the latest SRPMS
for ALSA I could find from freshrpms.net and I also tried building
the latest linux drivers for this chipset from Intel. I have not
been able to get sound working on this machine. Does anyone have
ideas on what I should try next? (In my previous attempts at
bringing up sound I did change the vol, pcm and cd levels from
their muted initial state and still no sound). Sound appears to
attempt to come up (the /proc/asound filesystem is created and the
only message logged is

Jul 29 11:07:56 localhost kernel: intel8x0: clocking to 48000

)

My /etc/modules.conf file is:

[root@xxxxx root]# cat /etc/modules.conf
alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 usb-uhci
alias eth0 bcm4400

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

alias char-major-116 snd

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
options snd major=116 cards_limit=1 device_mode=0666
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

post-install snd-card-0 /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove snd-card-0 /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || :

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
