I am a novice Linux user trying to get sound working with Redhat 8.0.
and would appreciate any help from the Linux community.

Hardware platform is a HP 3228 (Pavilion) Pentium 3 (233 MHz) fitted
with 256 MB RAM. The sound system in on-board Crystal CS4237.

Redhat system is out of the box - no ALSA sound.

There seem to be several issues:
-	difficulty recognising/configuring on-board sound hardware
-	unable to open mixer device

The basic symptoms/characteristics are that:
-	can not hear sound
-	can play CD music after execution of sndconfig application
-	can not adjust volume (receive error message [screenshot] enclosed
with email)
-	can not record (receive error message [screenshot] enclosed with
-	Error messages on shutdown
	-	Modprobe: Can't locate sound-slot-0
	-	Modprobe: Can't locate sound-service-0-0

Changing permission of /dev/mixer and /dev/audio from default crw_______
to crwx______ or crwxrwxrwx has no effect to execution of volume control
or recording applications.

I have included a list of my /etc/modules.conf file - it includes
several changes I have tried through mailing list suggestion re sound
problems experienced by others.

I would also appreciate any advise regarding interpretation of the
post-install and pre-remove instructions in the mosules.conf file.
