Try setting your CD to "Record"

Try:
/bin/aumix-minimal -c R

This worked for me, and I was having very similar problems with the audio.

I believe that somehow there is an error or flaw in the way RedHat 8.0
is handling sound.  My case, and this case don't seem to be unique
incidents anymore.
