I've always felt someone should write a book series called "For the
reasonably intelligent"
Thanks guys.
It's funny that the Dummies book didn't mention that.

I have already installed X. Can I switch to text only when it boots?
Absolutely. Edit /etc/inittab
and find the line that says this:
id:5:initdefault:
Change the '5' to a '3' and you're good. Also, if you open a terminal,
log init root and type 'init 3' you'll get there right now without a
reboot.
