Can someone tell me where to begin looking for what needs to be fixed, so that I can choose to log on with the Linux machine as my connection to the internet?

The easiest way to configure this is to use the redhat-config-network script and use that to configure your modem. I typically like to do things by hand but for configuring a modem to work in a RH environment I find their script to be quick-and-easy.
