In that case, I would link this way:

# cd /etc/init.d
# ln -s /usr/local/sbin/clamd ./clamd
# cd /etc/rc3.d
# ln -s ../init.d/clamd ./S98clamd

The reason being that most people expect startup scripts to live in
/etc/init.d (I think that's true of most Linux distros) so its probably a
good idea to follow the convention.

I install a lot of stuff from source and frequently have sym links from
/etc/init.d to various places under /usr/local, but I can still do the
customary "/etc/init.d/script stop" command and dont need to remember
exactly where I installed something ;-)
