2.4.9 Kernel in Enterprise Linux 2.1

Hi all,

An enterprise Linux question really, but I am already subscribed
to a few mailing lists and I'm running out of disk space ;)

We will be using Enterprise Linux AS 2.1 instead of version
3 because we need a certified platform for using Microfocus
COBOL 4.2. The kernel base for 2.1 AS is the 2.4.9 Kernel,
which has problems with multi-processor environments and
hyper-threading.

I believe much of these issues have been addressed in the
2.6 Kernel. My question is will the 2.6 kernel work with
Enterprise Linux 2.1 without changing packages like 'Glibc'?
this is important because inter dependancies may required many
system components to be upgraded, which may render our MicroFocus
COBOL 4.2 incompatible.

Any insight will be most appreciated, and apologies for posting
to the wrong list.

Jason
