    I don't use gaim, and I don't use up2date via the applet.  But I do
 use gnome.  With it, right click on the bottom panel.  Then
 --> Add to Panel --> Launcher from menu -->
         Internet --> Instant Messenger           for gaim
 or  System Tools --> Redhat Network Alert Icon   for up2date.
