I am having problems with a customer system, where ssl does not work
correctly unless root is logged in on the X session.
Does gnome provide part of the ssl functionality?That would be even more bizzare - one of the features of unix is the orthogonality of subsystems and modes. there is no difference to ssl whether there is anyone logged in or not, or whether a GUI is running. Perhaps you could explain a bit more about the "ssl does not work" part - for instance, log into the box remotely with the command "ssh -v <servername>" and save the output (assuming an unsuccessful attempt) and then repeat the process with the supposed requirement of root login in effect, sending the output from both "ssl -v" sessions?
This seems quite curious, one might even say, a pathological case.
