Accessing vfat partitions

I've had some issues with using the commands cp and tar when trying to move some data off of a mount vfat partition to a linux partition.

For example I want to move about 100 mp3 songs from my FAT32 partition to my home directory. Since they were all in a directory I did a
"cp -r * /home/lag/Media/mp3". Some time later I got a "segmentation fault" and the system hung. Even root couldn't restart the system.
It too a hard reboot.

The other thing I noticed that it doesn't like files over 500 Megs.

Any suggestions?
