I get this typically 3 or 4 times a day in the syslog (and on console)
on a new install of RH 9 on a 2.8Mhz Intel machine (intel chipset)

What is this telling me that I should know?

Is the error exactly the same every time or does it vary slightly?

There are two possibilities: there's either a bug in the kernel somewhere or you have some bad memory. Unless you have been tinkering with the kernel or you have some relatively unusual devices I'd be inclined to think it's bad memory. Go to www.memtest86.com and download the memory tester you'll find there.
