I understand. So for an athlon upgrade I have to take the kernel upgrade from the athlon dir, the glibc from the i686 dir and the rest from the i386 dir.

I am wondering why the glibc is not provided in the athlon dir? This creates a possible point of failure. And quoting Murphy, this will happen sooner or later.

Don't try to "upgrade" i686 packages with i386 ones:
