Or do what I do.. the lazy way.. (also the I don't know nothing and rather let the installer figure it out way)

 

make clean

make mrproper

make clean

make xconfig/oldconfig/menuconfig

make dep

make bzImage

make modules

make modules_install

make install

 

I think that's the steps.. (might have mized up between make bzImage and make modules_install)
