SMART is a drive-side feature, the motherboard is irrelevant. If you run smartd, for example, it'll happily try and send SMART commands to any drives it can find. Note that the message you saw may not have been caused by SMART, there are several other things it could have been, but SMART seems to be the most common cause of this error (well, actually informative warning). The IDE code could do with quietening in a few places.
