Security and Portmapper

Hi all,

I just got my system up and running and am going
through the process of securing it.

I have :sunrpc listening and have heard that can be a
significant vulnerability.

If I remember right, :sunrpc runs with netfs or
portmapper. Either way I hear that netfs and
portmapper are both vulnerabilities that I should be
able to disable.

The trick is though, when I try to remove portmapper,
there's a big chain of dependencies, including
Nautilus. It seems that if I want to remove
Portmapper, I'd need to remove Nautilus. From what I
gather, Nautilus is a pretty integral part of the
Gnome desktop.

Does anyone have any advice as to what I might do in
this circumstance?

I do intend to set up a good IP Tables firewall script
and Snort/ACID, so maybe I don't need to worry about
portmapper.

Cheers,
Matt
