dumpe2fs will give you the reserved block count.

According to an earlier answer posted on this list, you are
supposed to be able to see the .journal file in the root of
the ext3 fs under consideration if you mount it as -t ext2.
Doesn't work for me.  It mounts OK with a warning, but
I still can't see .journal. or the inode with ls -lai.
