gcc and crafty

Hi,
I recently downloaded version 19.4 of Robert Hyatt's wonderful and free
chess playing program called Crafty. Unfortunately the make failed due to
a lot of undefined references. Hyatt suggested that this could be fixed
by downloading intels free c++ compiler which would also generate much
faster code. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, this compiler is not
free (though I suppose I can download a free evaluation copy).
Anyhow, I tried to build version 19.3 of Crafty, which I had previously
done successfully, but this now also failed, with the same error messages.
So it would appear that there has been a change in the g++ (gcc) program,
or the linker perhaps.
Is there anything I can do to work around this?
  Thanks for any info,
   Richard
