This is a bit of a WAG, but there have been a number of reported problems
with the default LOCALE setting in RH 9 being a UTF setting.
RH has patched their perl-5.8.0 ( and a new revison -88 is now out)
with various fixes taken from perl-5.9 development track, but.
It goes w/o saying that your custom-kernel could be contributing too,
Im assuming since you didnt say so that youre not getting the errs
running the RH kernel ?
