Laptop display settings

I have Red Hat 9 installed on my Dell Latitude CPi laptop. When booted into Linux, the best settings I get for the display are 800x600 resolution with what looks like 16-bit color. In Windoze, I can set the display to 1024x768 with 24-bit color. That's what I would like to get to in Linux as well. I tried changing a setting in an X configuration file that has worked for me in the past, but didn't seem to help this time. This is a process I don't understand well (to say the least). My display adapter is a NeoMagic MagicGraph256AV. All this leads me to ask three questions:

1. What settings do I make to get this laptop to work at 1024x768 resolution with 24-bit color?

2. Is there a tutorial someplace that explains what X settings to make given the parameters of a particular display adapter? In other words, is there a tutorial or how-to on how to set up X for a given display?

3. A co-worker once showed me a web site that listed parameters for many, many monitors and display adapters. Anyone know what that site might be?

Thanks!
