Thanks for your reply, but authconfig did not have any effect. It changed the /etc/pam.d/system-auth file, adding nis to this line:

password sufficient /lib/security/$ISA/pam_unix.so nullok use_authtok md5 shadow nis

...but that didn't seem to make any difference....

After doing the authconfig command, you will need to restart xdm/gdm/kdm (graphical login) before it will allow NIS logins.
